Christmas Cheer # 1: Sprout Watches ( Review+G) 11/22

This post is a part of Christmas Cheer, a Holiday Gift Event, that will run on my blog from Nov 1-30.

I am honored to feature a green, eco-friendly product as my "premier" review and giveaway for Christmas Cheer.

I love to promote eco-friendly products to create more alertness among the masses and let them know what choices are available to them. Little did I know that there could be an eco-friendly watch! Now lets face it, how many of us wish to be proud owners of those fancy watches and dream of owning "that" piece that caught your eye in the mall ! Let me give you some news that will be sweet to your ears :)

How about a watch that is fancy, smart, elegant AND eco-friendly? It's Sprout Watches. Hubby and I always look for comfort and quality before fashion. So Sprout Watches was all that we needed and what more I could ask for when Sprout Watches are 80-86% eco-friendly.

What makes Sprout Watches eco-friendly? It is the material they use.

Here is some eco-food for thought about the material used, from Sprout Watches:

Corn Resin :
  • The shelf life of corn resin is similar to synthetic plastics. It will not break down during regular wear and use.
  •  In a composite environment, corn resin is 99% biodegradable to carbon dioxide and water within 365 days.Since it’s made from corn, it comes from a renewable resource.
  • Corn resin is bio-based, it therefore uses no oil resources in production
Organic Cotton:
  • Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment and is grown without the use of toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
Bamboo:
  •  Bamboo is considered eco-friendly based on its properties as 1) a natural (nonsynthetic) fiber, 2) a quick-growth plant (it's in the grass family) that sequesters greenhouse gases, and 3) a renewable plant that can grow back after its three to five year harvesting period.
Mineral Crystal:
  • Most lenses in the medium price range of watches are made from plexiglass, a type of synthetic plastic. Sprout® lenses are made from Mineral crystal which is a type of glass made from sand. It can technically be recycled.
Mercury Free Battery:
  • Mercury is actually a neurotoxin, which is harmful to both animals and humans. Exposure to even small amounts of mercury over a long period may cause negative health effects including damage to the brain, kidney, lungs and a developing baby. Sprout® watches use only Mercury Free batteries.
Recycled Fibres:
  • Sprout® packaging is made from at least 80% post consumer fibers. It is both recycled and recyclable.
I am so glad to have found Sprout Watches as I know this can make a wonderful and a thoughtful gift for my friends and family. I chose to review this smart looking watch for hubby in khaki and olive green.
It has the most comfortable strap, water resistant construction and looks sturdier than any watch I have seen. I like that fact that the dial has numbers - a perfect combination of traditional and contemporary. It is so light that you would hardly feel that you are wearing a watch.

But like you take care of every watch you own, Sprout Watches suggests too avoid any unwanted condensation, watches of all specifications (water resistant or not) should not be exposed to extreme temperatures such as cold or heat.

Sprout Watches are very affordable in price. I think it is true that it is easier for people to buy eco-friendly products if they are reasonably priced. For the excellent quality exhibited, Sprout Watches are rightly priced. Thank you Sprout Watches for inventing your amazing line with sustainable resources. This is one of the brands that I will introduce my children to.

Hop over and see who would be the lucky recipient of this beautiful watch this Christmas in your family! Do you have a bubbly teenager who is vibrant with life ? Check out this watch in  dark poppy red color.

I love this Cornflower Blue color! So sweet !

Sport this Forest Green watch for a casual yet trendy look.Perfect gift for anyone!

If I had a daughter I would get her this as a Christmas gift to show her my love and also demonstrate how to be stylish yet kind to the earth. The subtle pink and the numbers ( I love numbers!) are sure to add some style to the wrist.

Some men like bright colors, some don't. Sprout Watches come in bright and mild colors so that everyone gets their choice and most importantly happy to look at their watch! My dad is someone who would prefer this slate grey and charcoal color combo.

Buy it for your loved ones this Christmas! Sprout Watches are available from $24 -$65 on Sprout Watches, Amazon and Nordstorm.

A Chanukah Noel - A Second Story Press Review ( + Giveaway 11/10)

A beautiful pictorial story that can reach across cultures and teach children that "giving" and "sharing" doesn't have any boundaries.

I can't resist but to applaud the illustrator Gillian Newland for depicting the beauty of Christmas in a petite French village. The characters portrayed are just like real people talking to you as you read along. The illustrations make you feel that your are right next to Charlotte!

The author, Sharon Jennings takes on a journey on how a new move to France, leaves little Charlotte with having to face and live with a new language, culture and food. While she tries hard to cope with everything, there comes a joyous season which she is not sure if she can be a part of. Charlotte being Jewish, traditionally celebrates Hanukkah and has never been a part of a Christmas celebration. She sees everything around her filled with the beauty of Christmas - the lights, gifts, Christmas trees and so on! Deep down in her heart, she so wants to be a part of all that was going on around her!

Does she get to have a Christmas tree in her house? Does she get Christmas gifts? Does her dad help her to be a part of the celebration? The story has the sweetest ending that explains the true meaning of giving and sharing the love of the season

The book is beautifully bound and has a jacket. It says ages 5-9 on the cover but I read it to my 2.5 yr old and he loved the pictures and now calls it "Charlotte's Book" ! 5-9 yr olds are mature enough to understand the concepts of festivals.

Sandy's Incredible Shrinking Footprint - A Second Story Press Review( +Giveaway 11/10)

I have often come across airlines and many other organizations making efforts to reduce"carbon footprint". For each of us personally, "home" is the best place to start. I was so glad to receive this book to review as I introduced my son to a new word "recycle". He is small but it was worth reading it to him as he was repeating after me "Don't cut the trees!" , " Don't leave garbage on the beach!". Like I always say, children are never too young to read to!

I want you to take a look at the illustrations by peeking here.Did you find something different about the illustrations? Adrianna Steele-Card uses a combination of natural and recycled materials, highlighted by paints and fibers. Look closely and you will find fish made from leaves, cloths made from flower petals, and a host of other surprises.
  • This book is printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper.
  • The art for this book was made using a collage of reused, recycled, and natural materials
Carole Carpenter specializes in a program aims to teach people how to listen to children, to learn from them and to work in their best interests. Femida Handy is a professor on Environmental Studies. They put thier skills and knowledge together to create this wonderful book to teach children about the importance of keeping the environment clean and green.

The book authored by Carole Carpenter and Femida Handy is about how Sandy learns about " ecological footprint" . She learns it in the most fun place - by the beach! Sandy and her dog, Pepper love to visit Grandpa who lived by sea-side.Sandy meets the star of the story, "The Garbage Lady" who adds meaning to the story and to Sandy's life.

If you want to teach your children about environmental awareness, this is a good choice to start with.

Buy it from Amazon for $11.51.

Green Ostrich - Sandwich Bags - Review + Giveaway 10/29

When I came across, Green Ostrich I did not quite understand the "Ostrich" part of Green Ostrich.. So I found out this from Green Ostrich.

" Ostriches are durable; true dinosaurs, they have roamed this planet for over 120 million years. They typically live at least 40 years in the wild, and they are known to live as long as 70 years in captivity. Ostriches are also memorable; frankly, they are funny-looking. That was enough for us. We offer Earth-friendly, durable, memorable products that replace common disposable products. So, our products and an ostrich have a lot in common. "

Green Ostrich is one such company founded by a woman who wanted to find some " environmentally-sound solutions" for everyday living. And thus was born, Green Ostrich. It is filled with "green stuff" ! Gifts, items for your home, Lunch ware, School Supplies, Kitchen ware...you will love them all!

  • Food-safe
  • Lead-free, bpa free and phthalate free
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Reusable
  • Bag made from thick European cotton fabric and hand-sewn in the USA
The bag is very practical for carrying a sandwich or light snacks. It is stylish to carry! If you are giving your child a sandwich, there is a spot to write your child's name so that you can get back your bag safe home. We all know how children can loose things at school or outside home. I just wish these bags were a bit more considerably priced so that even if I loose 1 bag, I can buy a bunch of them again. Presently, Green Ostrich has a sale on these reusable bags.If you buy 4, you get 1 free!

Thanks to Green Ostrich, 1 lucky winner will have the chance to win 1 Lunch Skins Reusable Bag!

EcoMom - Smartypants Gummy Vitamins : Review & + $25 GC Giveaway (10/29)

"Founded to address the connection between the health of our environment & the health of our children, EcoMom® is committed to making eco-conscious living easy, affordable & rewarding with education, support, tools & products."

EcoMom is an online store that sells a variety of products that are environment friendly and healthy for you and your children. From baby gear to mommy gear, EcoMom is the place for eco-friendly baby products. If you have a baby, toddler or a young child at home, EcoMom is a place you must stop-by.All organic food for babies and toddler - you can feed without having to be worried about what to feed. Now that "what to..." question still drives me crazy ! My toddler is a picky-eater and I do not want to talk about the "I do not want to anything" days ! I was always worried if he was getting all the nutrients he needs for his growth and development.I had to consider giving him some muti-vitamins to fill in the holes.

EcoMom sent me Smartypants Gummy Vitamins and I was naturally anxious to offer my toddler. But I realized that it was only meant for 3 yrs and older. They look attractive and covered with a thin sugar dust...shhh..they are great for adults too!

These gummies come in different colors and are eco-friendly.

  • Non-tuna sourced DHA Omega 3's ( Their fish oil comes exclusively from eco-friendly small fish sources which eliminates mercury risk and avoids depleting salmon or tuna populations).
  •  Meets 100% of the US RDI of Vitamin D
  • Includes Choline plus 12 other nutrients;
  • Only 5g of organic cane sugar per serving ( that is 80% less than a glass of unsweetened apple juice) ;
  • GMP-Certified;
  • Gluten and Casein free;
  • No High Fructose Corn Syrup;
  • Natural flavors and colors from natural sources
  • Made in California
My toddler tried to taste but he doesn't have a thing for candy so he particularly didn't like the sugar dust on top. He prefers the plain gummies that are smooth. But all the better for me because I love this yummy, gummy vitamin!

It seemed a little bit over-priced for me but I checked the comparison chart and was sort of convinced since many vitamins do not come supplemented with fish oil. Fish oil is a "wonder" food and it is proven to boost children's brainpower.  It is the Omega-3 fatty acids - specifically EPA and DHA, that make fish oils so beneficial. So how do you persuade your kids to take them? Try the Smartypants Gummy Vitamins as they are most likely to ask for it everyday!

Buy them online at EcoMom ! Use the exclusive discount code SBBL635 and receive a 15% discount on your first order.

Take advantage of EcoMom's new program EcoPass!

What Good is God? ( A Philip Yancey book review)

The author, Philip Yancey tries to address the most basic questions that any normal person would ask..these questions are on every one's mind but not everyone tries to find an answer. Philip Yancey's writings have always been enlightening in the ways he approaches the issue and different other subjects he takes into consideration while studying the topic. If you are familiar with Yancey's style of writing, you will definitely like this book. If it's your first time, I would suggest Fearfully and Wonderfully made or What's so amazing about grace.

What Good is God is not an easy read, you put on your thinking hat and search for the truth as you travel through the pages with Yancey. How does belief actually matter in the lives of those who suffer? Where is God amidst all the suffering in this world? What is the whole point of believing in God?

Yancey put these questions to test in different places in the world and writes about his dialogues with people from various cultures and backgrounds. I got to read about some speeches that I would have probably never listened to or know about a group of people, who would have remained strangers to me forever.

Yancey travelled to many places and spoke in different settings and as he writes about them, he can only say that faith can withstand even the most trying fires of life. Grace still abounds for all for us and God still is present in all the good that the world has. You may not find a direct answer to the title, even if you jump pages hoping to find the answer. because it is not an easy question to be answered objectively. But your thinking pattern finally changes to find the goodness that God is still bestowing and that faith does matter.

Philip Yancey throws light on issues that we think were not just justifiable by God..why did that terrible incident happen? I always pick-up Philip Yancey's books right away as I know that I will view the world and my own life and faith through a telescope, microscope...and finally it all does make sense.

What Good is God? All the good in the world.

Review: KJV Study Bible for Boys

KJV Study Bible for Boys

Encouraging my son to read God's word is one of the things I try to put more effort and time into. Though he is little, he will learn the importance of how the scriptures can build Christ-like character in him as he grows. I was naturally excited when I found this strikingly beautiful ( it's funny how children often judge a book by its cover!) Bible for boys. It came in a very nice box and the cover of the Bible is beautiful.Any young boy who gets this will not take his eyes and hands off this Bible! It is the ever-famous King James Version ( it is always a pleasure to read KJV!) which comes along with other interesting features like:
  • Book Introductions. Descriptive features that highlight contents of each book of the Bible.
  • Good Morning, God. Brief devotionals tied to specific Bible passages that encourage children to read, think, and pray about their personal lives and relationships.
  • Genuine Heroes and Heroines. Biographical sketches of persons whose lives and actions display traits boys and girls can admire and emulate.
  • Men's World and Women's World. Details what life was like for men and women in Bible times.
  • Be All You Can Be. Challenges boys and girls to act appropriately, make right decisions, and choose worthwhile values.
  • Drawings, illustrations, and maps. Supplements to assist understanding of the Bible in proper context.
This Bible will be a perfect choice for a gift..no, not just a gift, it will make a royal gift for a 8-12 yr old boy ! My nephew will be getting this Bible this christmas.

If it didn't have the "Boys" on the cover, I would love to take this Bible with me to church and prayer meetings. It is light weight and has the perfect combination of scriptures in KJV, beautiful colored illustrations and  other little details like I mentioned above. It is a study Bible for a little boy as it introduces the reader to a little bit more information on what he is reading. It can be an introduction to study Bibles.

Don't hesitate to trust me when I say that this will make a beautiful gift, just go ahead and buy it for that little boy! There is also the same study Bible in pink for that little princess!

You can buy it online from Baker publishing group for $23.99.

EcoUsable Bottles : Review + Giveaway ( 10/29)

"Saving our planet one bottle at a time"

One of the many gravest problems that we confront in today's world is "plastic pollution". Evidence of plastic pollution is visible and most people are waking up to reducing or eliminating the use of plastic in daily life.

Water is something that we all carry in our bags or at least I have had instances when I wished I carried a water bottle with me so I didn't have to drink from a fountain or a shop.I have tried a few bottles and haven't been satisfied as they smelled like I was drinking "plastic" and not water.

I had the opportunity to review EcoUsable bottles and I was sent the following 2 bottles in lovely colours!

Ecobus - 10 oz                     Orange Big Dipper - 25 oz

What better way to make drinking water safer and pure, especially when we are outside home ! I personally think everyone should own one of these Ech2o Filtered Water Bottles that come in 18 oz and 25 oz.

EcoUsable has a great collection of bottles that people of all ages would love to carry stylishly. The bottles come is brilliant colors and sizes. Review: The Holy Bible ( God's Word Translation)

Large, Easy-to-Read Type for Children Ages 6-12.

This Bible, published by Baker Books has the God's Word Translation. I am a King James fan and this translation or version, is new to me. But it is a very easy to read version for any young child who can read by himself. For those of you curious to know about God's Word translation, I will include an excerpt from the Bible's preface:

" Many Bible translations contain theological terms that have little, if any, meaning for most non theologically trained readers. God's Word avoids using these traditional terms and substitutes words that carry the same meaning in common English"

Here's how Psalm 23 reads in this version ( I love the simplicity and warmth in the words):

1   The Lord is my shepherd, I am never in need.
2  He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside peaceful waters.
3  He renews my soul.
He guides me along the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name.
4  Even though I walk through the dark valley of death,
because you are with me, I fear no harm.
Your rod and your staff give me courage.
5  You prepare a banquet for me while my enemies watch.
You anoint my head with oil
    My cup overflows
6  Certainly, goodness and mercy will stay close to me all the days of my life,
and I will remain in the Lord's house for days without end.

Special features for young readers include:
  • 12.5 point type for easier reading
  • Dynamic full-colour illustrations
  • The teachings of Jesus index
  • Single-column format
  • Easy-to-carry size
  • Application index
The language is easy to understand and it captures the meaning of the original Hebrew text  without altering the meaning. It is a highly reliable version as many translations alter the original meaning of the scriptures or something gets lost somewhere in the process of translation. I will definitely consider my son using this Bible as it is a perfect version to graduate to just when he is done with his picture Bible. This will make a great gift for a young child and it has a nice page where you can write a message to the gift recipient.
